Guelph Wellness Initiative Update
NOTE: The below message was sent to all registered GWI participants on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.
Hello Guelph Wellness Initiative Participants,
I am writing to you today, on behalf of the Advanced Foods and Materials Network (AFMNet) - Canada’s national food and bio-materials research network based at the University of Guelph - regarding the restructuring of the Guelph Wellness Initiative.
The Guelph Wellness Initiative (GWI) was originally conceived by AFMNet as a resource to provide public access to personalized health and wellness information and to serve as a knowledge transfer vehicle for AFMNET-funded research on food and health. The launching of the website received very positive reaction and support with approximately 400 people signing up to participate in planned activities.
With the departure of Dr. Ron Woznow and Paula Allen, AFMNet management has appointed Dr. Ahmed El-Sohemy, Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto, as GWI Chair. Initial review by Dr. El-Sohemy and other AFMNet researchers suggest that the program needs to be restructured to have a clear scientific evidence-based component.
AFMNet’s expertise is on the healthy eating side of wellness through scientific research. Our mandate is to support and encourage collaboration among scientific organizations leading to public good, knowledge transfer and the application and commercialization of information and technologies. Within this mandate, AFMNet can support the emergence of GWI in partnership with other institutions to:
- Provide a knowledge translation vehicle to you, the public, with new and emerging evidence-based information;
- Support scientific studies for development of personalized nutrition and health.
Moving forward, we will be looking to the several existing initiatives with a mandate similar or complementary to the GWI, to invest their expertise in the Initiative to achieve a successful outcome on the community side.
While the GWI will take a different look, the output will have more meaningful results for you, the participants, as well as for the scientific community. We will continue to keep you updated on all developments and hope you will remain inspired for the achievements possible through this Initiative.
Sincerely,
Perry Lidster
Managing Director - AFMNet
